Why do this course?
In this series of four online, interactive workshops teachers will build their confidence and discover practical techniques for delivering effective and engaging learning experiences in socially distanced classrooms.
The workshops explore the issues which teachers face in socially distanced classrooms, providing clear tips and practical activities to address the challenges and create positive and active learning environments.
Each 90-minute workshop is delivered by an experienced Cambridge trainer, who draws on insights from recent research.
The workshops are designed for teachers who
- Have a recommended B2 level of English or higher
- Teach secondary or adult learners

Expert Support for teachers: The workshops were developed by experienced teachers and trainers and are delivered by Cambridge trainers to ensure you are fully supported in your learning.
Contextualised Learning: Our trainers will help you to relate the workshop content to your context, helping you to apply what you’ve learnt and ensure a positive impact for your learners.
Collaborative, interactive and practical learning: Each workshop includes input, tasks and opportunities for discussion together with pre and post session tasks where you will be asked to apply and reflect on what has been learnt.
Proof of learning: There will be a final evaluation.
Programme structure and content:
Creating a positive classroom environment
In this workshop you will learn how to develop a positive classroom culture in a situation where there may be issues with movement and audibility, and where learners may have been out of a formal education setting for a period of time. The workshop will look at fostering group cohesion and supporting wellbeing, the importance of learner engagement, and the use of routines and seating as part of the classroom management strategy.
Developing speaking and writing skills
In this session we will consider the challenges of delivering speaking and writing lessons in the socially distanced classroom, where there may be constraints on learner interactions and monitoring. We will explore a number of activities which we can use and adapt, and look at practical ideas for monitoring and giving feedback.
Teaching grammar and vocabulary
In this workshop we will look at what makes an engaging language learning task, and which characteristics are particularly important in the socially distanced classroom. We will consider ways of adapting grammar activities from coursebooks, and engaging and effective ways of practising vocabulary. We will also look at appropriate ways of monitoring and giving feedback.
Planning effective and engaging lessons
This workshop will pull together the learning from the previous sessions and look at the implications for planning effective online lessons. We will consider the tips and activities which support successful learning, and apply them to coursebook material, giving confidence to adapt your material appropriately for the socially distanced classroom.
